Shefali Shah, one of the most acclaimed actors of her generation, opened up about dealing with impostor syndrome ahead of the release of Delhi Crime Season 3. In a recent conversation with Hindustan Times, she spoke about returning as supercop Vartika Chaturvedi and why performing still makes her nervous.

‘Every time, I feel it’s a fluke’

Shefali has earned numerous accolades for Delhi Crime, including Best Actress at the Asian Academy Creative Awards five years ago. However, she shared that stepping into Vartika’s character never feels easy. “Every time I feel this is a fluke. It’s like impostor syndrome,” she said. “I actually have this feeling that when the director says ‘action,’ I will just stand there blankly, as if he’s speaking another language.”

‘I don’t know if I know the art’

The actor explained that this fear and self-doubt are not limited to Delhi Crime, but extend to all her projects. “I am terrified, and I’m not fishing for compliments,” she admitted. “Not just for Vartika, but in general, I’m scared—and it works for me. With every project, I feel that maybe I managed it last time, but I don’t know if I really understand the art of acting. What helps is that my instincts are still alive, and it hasn’t turned into a formula. Every role feels like starting over again.”

Despite the anxiety, Shefali said that this nervous energy often fuels her performance. “The way I work is spontaneous and from the heart,” she explained. “It’s not that I don’t use my mind, but I don’t have a set method or manual for becoming Vartika or for any scene. The day I feel I completely know it, I think that’s when I should stop.”
