Aamir Khan’s UNRELEASED 1983 FTII short film Subah Subah FINALLY out; has a Deewaar and ‘Ram Siya Ram’ connection

Superstar Aamir Khan has been in the news of late for several reasons. Two weeks ago, he celebrated his 60th birthday and on this occasion, he announced that he’s dating Gauri Spratt. A few days back, he unveiled his audition for Inspector Manohar Lal in Laapataa Ladies (2024). He didn’t get selected for it and instead, Kiran Rao cast Ravi Kishan. The gesture of releasing the audition video was well received. And now, another fascinating tape of the superstar has found its way on the internet. The Film and Television Institute of India (FTII) on March 28 uploaded a 1983 student diploma film named Subah Subah on their YouTube handle. It features Aamir Khan in a leading role.
This was probably the first or one of Aamir's first acting assignments. It features a very young Aamir Khan playing the role of an IMA (Indian Military Academy) aspirant. He lives with his mother and kind-hearted elder sister. He’s also dating a lovely girl and trouble arises when they both get harassed by the goons.
Aamir Khan was probably 17 when he worked on this film and it's fascinating to see how he performed at that young age. Even then, his screen presence was arresting. This is a film in which he gets a chance to be the silent hero as well as break into a dance and also action.
The narrative is a bit random. Towards the end of the film, Aamir Khan and actress Karishma (not to be confused with Karishma Kapoor) suddenly sing ‘Keh Doon Tumhe’ from Deewaar (1975). The beginning of the film shows Shubha Khote as Aamir’s mother playing the song ‘Ram Siya Ram’ from Geet Gaata Chal (1975) on a tape recorder. Both the producers of the film have been credited in the end credits. Funnily, they have been credited twice, probably by mistake.
Besides Aamir Khan, Karishma, Ajit, Ishrat Khan and Shubha Khote have also performed well. The end credits inform viewers that while Rajat Dholakia worked on the background score, the assistant cameraman was none other than Anil Mehta.
The FTII’s Instagram handle about Subah Subah has a caption that says, ‘Shot at FTII, this film marked an exciting chapter in Aamir’s early career, and his talent was already evident! Though not an FTII student, Aamir Khan seized the opportunity, and the rest, as they say, is cinematic history.’
It was thanks to Subah Subah and a few other FTII films of Aamir that he got a chance to work in Ketan Mehta’s 1984 film Holi. These films helped the star hone his acting skills and it's no wonder that we saw a more refined and worthy performance in his first film as a lead actor, Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak (1988).
