Tusshar Kapoor weighs in on star kids struggles: “If you can’t handle the ups and downs, then this field isn’t for you”
Tusshar Kapoor has one piece of advice for a star kid entering the film industry, “Put your armor on because it’s a tough, tough ride.” The actor, who has experienced his own highs and lows since his debut, acknowledges that while it may be easier for someone from a film family to get started, he believes the journey becomes much tougher for them afterward.
Tusshar Kapoor shared, “When you’re someone’s son or daughter in the industry, you need to be strong and resilient. Regardless of how many hits you deliver, there’s always an effort to bring you down or emphasize what you haven’t achieved over what you have. But if you’re an outsider, even a small achievement can make people say, ‘Wow, look at what you’ve done!’” he said in an exclusive conversation with SCREEN.
Isn’t it tougher for outsiders, though, as they struggle to secure that initial break? Tusshar Kapoor responds, “I want people to see that it’s a fair, level playing field for everyone. Yes, it might be easier for industry people to get a break due to connections, but beyond that, it’s about your own network, how you make a film, your on-screen presence, and marketability. It’s definitely a bit tougher on insiders. We have to pass numerous tests to convince people in the industry—and the audience—that we’re here on our own merit. The audience doesn’t care about these biases; they just want to be entertained.”
Reflecting on his acting journey from his debut in Mujhe Kucch Kehna Hai in 2001 to now, Tusshar Kapoor shares that it’s been filled with both highs and lows, much like any other artist’s experience. “There have been ups and downs. Without the setbacks, I wouldn’t have made it this far. That cycle is essential—it’s part of the journey that helps you grow. You become stronger and ready to take on more work. If you can’t handle the ups and downs, then this field isn’t for you,” he said.
Tusshar Kapoor shares that he’s enjoying this phase of his career more than his early years. “I look back at my time in the industry with a lot of nostalgia and have only grown happier over time. At first, I was still figuring out my strengths and how to navigate the film world. I’m not naturally social or outgoing, so I had to push myself out of my comfort zone back then. I appreciate the growth I’ve experienced in the industry. I’ve learned what it truly takes to be content in entertainment—you don’t just shoot and move on. You have to be approachable, media-savvy, and willing to socialize,” the 47-year-old reflects.
Tusshar Kapoor is set to appear in Dus June Kii Raat: Chapter Two on JioCinema, directed by Tabrez Khan and co-starring Priyanka Chahar Choudhary. Tusshar shares that the response to the second season has been positive. He stated, “We focused mainly on post-release promotions and didn’t go all out before the release. However, the audience response has been good so far—people loved the first season and are also enjoying season two. It makes me happy.”
Tusshar describes the shoot as both “great” and “hectic.” “We shot both seasons back-to-back with a 12-hour shooting schedule, tackling multiple tasks each day. The team was fantastic, so we didn’t have much time to feel tired,” he explained.
Tusshar Kapoor, who has starred in two digital projects—Dus June Kii Raat and Booo Sabki Phategi—calls OTT a “great medium.” He further added, “It allows a lot of freedom to experiment with different genres. I’m able to try things I haven’t done before; in cinema, audiences expect a certain likability from an actor. With OTT, you can go a bit wild and try something different. Let’s see how that works out for me in the future, too. People want to watch content that feels relatable.”
“There’s less pressure without box office numbers, but there’s a different kind of validation required,” Tusshar explains. “If you’re satisfied with the appreciation from your target audience and don’t mind the lack of clear metrics, then you can thrive in this medium. It’s mostly about perception—viewership isn’t as straightforward; it’s a bit unclear,” he concludes.
