Since 2022, multiplexes and most single-screen theatres in India have celebrated Cinema Lovers Day or National Cinema Day at regular intervals. The first edition took place in September 2022 when the tickets were sold for just Rs. 75. As expected, the move got a massive response. The second Cinema Lovers Day, held in September 2023, was also well-received. Meanwhile, Cinema Lovers Day was held on February 23 this year when the ticket rates were slashed to Rs. 75. Article 370 released on the same day and it had an advantage. And now, theatres are all set to celebrate Cinema Lovers Day again, that too, this Friday, May 31.

The big release this week is Mr & Mrs Mahi, starring Rajkummar Rao and Janhvi Kapoor. A multiplex official said, “The film already has a buzz and the Rs. 99 offer will further give the film a boost. It’s also a great start to the movie-watching season again.” Since Eid, very few significant movies have been released due to elections. With the last phase of elections on Saturday, June 1, major films are all set to arrive in cinemas once again.

The other releases on May 31 are Divya Khossla-Anil Kapoor-Harshvardhan Rane starrer Savi, the kiddie flick Chhota Bheem And The Curse Of Damyaan and the Hollywood slasher film The Strangers: Chapter 1. These films, too, are expected to reap the benefits of Cinema Lovers Day.

Coming back to Mr & Mrs Mahi, it is directed by Sharan Sharma, whose debut directorial was Gunjan Saxena – The Kargil Girl (2020), and produced by Karan Johar’s Dharma Productions and Zee Studios. A few days ago, Bollywood Hungama was the first one to report that Mr & Mrs Mahi is a rare film that is passed with a ‘U’ certificate, that too with zero cuts.

Interestingly, multiplexes were all set to celebrate Cinema Lovers Day last month, on April 19. In fact, the makers of Do Aur Do Pyaar even publicized the officer on their social media handles. The Vidya Balan-Pratik Gandhi-Ileana DCruz-Sendhil Ramamurthy starrer was all set to release on the same day. The offer was withdrawn one day before because of the elections.
