Rhea Chakraborty embraces the term 'chudail' amid tumultuous times after Sushant Singh Rajput’s death; says, “Maybe I know how to do black magic”
The tragic demise of Bollywood actor Sushant Singh Rajput in 2020 sent shockwaves throughout the nation, leaving an irreplaceable void in the lives of his family, friends, and loved ones. In the aftermath of Sushant's untimely death, Rhea Chakraborty, his partner, found herself at the centre of a storm, accused by his family of abetting his suicide. Rhea faced a deluge of backlash at the time, enduring derogatory labels from detractors, including being called a “chudail” or a “witch.” Now, Rhea has offered her response to these labels.
Rhea Chakraborty addressed this issue during a session titled Rising from the Ashes and Finding Herself on the second day of the India Today Conclave Mumbai 2023. When asked about the impact of being labelled a witch, the actress candidly remarked, “I kind of like the name ‘chudail’ (witch).” She further added, “It is interesting. Back in the day who was a witch? A witch was a woman who did not subscribe to the patriarchal society or her own opinion that was against the popular opinion of men and the patriarchal society. Maybe I am that person, maybe I am a chudail. Maybe I know how to do black magic.”
In her discussion, Rhea Chakraborty also addressed the prevalent patriarchal mindset in society. She commented, “It is what it was, and it is what it is in our society. Unfortunately, even today if some man is successful and he gets married and his success ratio drops they will say dekho jab se ye zindagi mein aayi tab se ye iska career kharab ho gaya hai (Look, ever since she ventured into his life, his career has gone haywire). It's almost like the man had no identity before the woman. Men in India most definitely do not listen to their wives or girlfriends and if they did it would’ve been a much better society.”
For the unversed, Rhea Chakraborty was arrested by the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) in September 2020 and subsequently detained at the Byculla jail for nearly six weeks. She is currently out on bail, and the matter is sub judice at the Bombay High Court.
