Rohan Vinod Mehra, who entered the scene with Baazaar, is currently seen in a challenging role of an army officer in Bejoy Nambiar’s action web show Kaala on Disney+ Hotstar. The actor plays a character who goes through a certain timeline and later plays the father to the character played by Avinash Tiwary. In an exclusive chat with Bollywood Hungama, Rohan said that he was never hesitant to play a father to a grown up man so early in his career.

“I, personally, was always okay with it,” he said. “In the script, it was clearly mentioned that my character has a young part, middle-aged part and older part. So, I didn’t have any reservations in that because I knew that the audience, despite seeing me as old and Avinash’s father, will also see me as young as 25. I think when you see the show and see my young part, you will see that I am looking very young. I just knew in my mind that if I could convince people that I can play old, the young part they will believe anyway because I am young.”

But his near and dear ones were concerned about this aspect of his character. “Obviously, like you are saying, people around me did say whether I am sure I want to do this as I might be seen in a different way in this age. But if I speak completely truthfully, I never had that reservation. It was complete excitement for me,” he said.

Another major reason why Rohan signed Kaala was the director. “Firstly, just a chance to work and collaborate with Bejoy Nambiar was a big opportunity. I am a huge fan of his work. I love all his films and everything he has done till date. This coupled with the fact that the script and the character were so strong. The character is something very different; challenging and exciting,” he said.

While narrating Nambiar’s qualities, Rohan added, “He was like a dream-come-true. He is someone who puts in a lot of trust in his actors. I feel if he has cast you for the role and he sees you play the role, when you are on set with him, he gives complete trust to you. He will let you take the character where you feel the character would be the most truthful. Unless you are going completely off, he will tell you to not do it this way or that way.”

Kaala was the first time that Rohan carried out action and stunts on screen. But he said that he was always prepared for this. “It was very new for me because this is my first action based project. But that also made it very exciting. I have always dreamt of playing an Army officer and a character like this. A lot of my normal workouts are based on military workouts and regimes because I find it very exciting. So I felt I have been ready to play this my whole life. It was something that I maybe manifested for myself,” he said.

Rohan is pleased with how Kaala has been received. “It’s been slow and steady so far and with every passing day, it’s been more and more loved. The word-of-mouth is very good. I have been getting messages from the audiences and critics for my performance. It’s a great feeling to have,” he added.
